The Student Health Unit provides the following services to full-time students of NUI Galway.  Watch our short promo video to see what we offer.

GP Service

Acute illness treatment, Hospital/Consultant/Psychiatric Referral service (Not intended as a replacement for your GP, you are advised to continue with your GP for ongoing medical conditions).  International students who require medical care/medication during their time in NUIG, must provide written evidence from their home physician regarding their medical care/medications. Please ensure to arrange this before you leave your home country.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, students are not permitted to enter the Health Unit without a prior appointment which you can now arrange online. All initial consultations are by telephone consultation. If a doctor/nurse feels they need to see you, they will arrange this during the telephone consultation.

Consultations with the Student Health Doctor and Nurse are usually free but there are charges for some of the services offered. (See our price list below). Book an appointment using our appointment request form

The Student Health Unit offers advice and guidance the many methods of contraception options available to you.  It’s important to choose contraception that fits your situation and lifestyle. Whether it is for family planning, emergency contraception, Implannon Removal/Insertion, it is always a good idea to discuss your contraceptive choices with your GP, as you may need to experiment to find what works best for you.  For more information on Your Contraceptive Choices, please download the HSE leaflet here

We are unable  to provide the Coil or IUS in the Student Health Unit. Please contact your own GP or your nearest Family Planning Clinc

You can book an appointment with the Student Health Unit to discuss your options using our online appointment request form.

Sexual Health Clinics

The Student Health Unit offers advice and guidance for people with concerns or queries regarding their sexual health. If you are experiencing symptoms or have had contact with a positive STI or would like a routine STI check and do not have symptoms,  you can request an appointment using our appointment request form.

For more information please download the HSE guide to sexually transmitted infections (STI's).

"Remember too that using ‘dual protection’ (condoms with another method of contraception) will help you to have safer sex. Plan ahead and carry contraception with you as the most common reason why people do not use contraception is because they had sex when they weren’t planning to or when they were unprepared. Condoms offer the best protection from both an unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)".

Blood Tests

Blood testing is available here in the Student Health Unit and you can use the bloods option on our appointments request form to arrange an appointment. For blood tests requested by another GP or consultant, we require a headed letter stating what bloods are required and this must be attached when requesting an appointment online. There is a charge for this service, please see our price list below.
